JC and Rachel were married last month after a whirlwind romance that lasted 3-4 months, depending on who you ask. JC had recently moved to the area to play hockey for Toronto, and Rachel graduated from University in Quebec and found a job as a lab technician in Toronto. The two first saw each other at a local coffee shop. After seeing the same pretty face three weeks in a row, JC asked for her name. Two days later, they went on their first date and were married by the end of August.
Year 1: Death in the family

JC and Rachel welcomed a son this year! They named him Thomas William Clark. Rachel has always loved the name Thomas and wanted to name her firstborn son Thomas. They chose William for JC's father, who passed away last year. Though he is still reeling from his father's death, JC adores his son and takes his family responsibilities very seriously.

JC and Rachel adored baby Thomas, but they really werent planning on having another baby for three or four years (or at least until Thomas was out of diapers). They were shocked when they found out Rachel was having twins! After getting over their shock, they set to preparing their two bedroom apartment for the addition of two more babies...and started looking at houses. Rachel went into labor at 31 weeks, two days before their closing date on a new home. JC attended the closing alone, his thoughts with babies Jenna and Wren, both in the NICU. Both girls were able to go home after an eight week hospital stay, apparently none the worse for their early arrival. Thomas regards the girls as strange creatures and doesn't actually want anything to do with them. JC and Rachel are running low on sleep (and patience), but they absolutely adore their kids.

Because JC travels so often with work, he started to worry about Rachel at home alone with the kids--so he surprised her with a dog! Lena is a sweet Australian Shepherd who loves the kids and is very tolerant of their antics. She is also turning into quite a guard dog--not letting anyone but "her family" into the house (which causes problems occasionally). Thomas adores Lena, while Jenna and Wren think she's just a soft, cuddly, moving target. Rachel wasn't too happy about having another thing to take care of, but finds Lena a comforting presence in the evenings while JC is gone and the kids are in bed.

This year, JC was promoted to assistant captain on his hockey team! The job doesn't come with a pay raise, but he is proud of what the promotion says about his skills both on and off the ice. Rachel enrolled Thomas in a preschool class this year--he goes twice a week in the mornings and absolutely loves it! Jenna and Wren, of course, want to tag along too, but Rachel takes them out for special snacks while Thomas is in school (which satisfies the girls).

JC and Rachel traveled to eastern Quebec for Rachel's family reunion! JC felt a bit out of place, since everyone else was speaking French (a language he doesn't happen to know well). Rachel was in her element--having grown up in Quebec, French is almost more natural to her than English. Thomas, Jenna, and Wren were a bit confused at first, but quickly started picking up French words--especially ones they've heard Rachel use before. Within fifteen minutes, they were playing with their cousins and having a great time!

JC and Rachel welcomed one of JC's teammates into their home this year. Etienne Allard joined the team at the beginning of the year, and, since JC knew Rachel spoke French (and he now knows a little as well), figured his family could host the rookie (who formerly lived in northern Quebec, and speaks mostly French). The kids love having "Uncle Etienne" around, and he seems to adore the kids as well.

Thomas went to grade one this year, while Jenna and Wren were excited to enter Kindergarten! JC jokingly wondered what Rachel was going to do with her time now that the kids were in school---and six and a half months later, he was the new father of triplets! Emma, Anna, and Daniel entered the world prematurely, but also fairly healthy. They all stayed in the hospital until about a week after their original due date and were discharged home with 72 hours of each other. The older kids LOVE having the triplets--each of them has "adopted" a triplet as "theirs" (Thomas with Daniel, Jenna with Anna, and Wren with Emma). The kids are old enough to help retrieve things, entertain the babies, and even help to feed them sometimes--JC and Rachel are welcoming all the help they can get--especially since Etienne is buying a new house to share with his fiancee!
