Thanks for your input. We actually love the name, so there's no swaying us :-) There's a lot of meaning behind it, as it's actually a very loose pronunciation of his Chinese name- Rui-Xiang (englishfied, it sounds a lot like ree-shen, hence Reeshen). I've also heard it before..an aquaitence I knew was called Reeshen, although I don't know how he spelled it. And when doing a google search, it came up a few times as names for others... a first name in South Africa and as a last name in the United States. So even though it's very rare, it really is a name :-) And I love the sound of it, even if it weren't!

Wow. I know the pronunciation would be difficult, but have you given any thought to keeping the Rui-Xiang spelling? I'm a sucker for authentic* spelling. Phonetic spellings just look so insulting, as if I couldn't learn how to pronounce it correctly. But I realize I'm in the minority on this and I don't have to carry the name through life.
Of course I realize that Rui-Xiang is not, strictly speaking, authentic either. Chinese character(s) would be. But I've studied Russian and am used to the idea of transliteration. All scholars of Russian use the same system. Change one letter and the sound changes. It's the same for Chinese, I'm sure. It's the (amateur) linguist in me speaking.
