Is it just me or are Esperanto female names just cloyingly saccharine? I didn't realize how much I don't like them until I perused the list for a CAF game. The male names were predominantly "Esperanto form of" whatever male name that's pretty classic (George, Peter, Paul, and so forth). But for female names they tend to be more... nauseating, if you will. Maybe the guy who made up the language was also trying to craft an image of his ideal woman. :-x These were pretty typical examples:

ROZABELA f Esperanto
Means "rosy-beautiful" in Esperanto.

KANDAJHA f Esperanto
Means "made of candy" in Esperanto.

KARESINDA f Esperanto
Means "worthy of a caress" in Esperanto.

KATIDA f Esperanto
Means "kittenish" in Esperanto.

LUKSA f Esperanto
Means "luxurious" in Esperanto.

DEZIRINDA f Esperanto
Means "desirable" in Esperanto.

ADORINDA f Esperanto
Means "adorable" in Esperanto.

What do you think? Somehow endearing or just sexist?

Ew ew ew. I guess 'rosy-beautiful' isn't TOO bad of a meaning, but, 'worthy of a caress?' You have got to be kidding.

I agree with you, they do seem shallow and trivializing - like names you'd expect to see on slavegirls in an ultra-cheesy sex-fantasy story.

Now you've got me trying to come up with male names that'd be the approximate counterparts..

KAPOSHTONIDO - "head like a rock"
MONOJHO - "made of money"
HUNDIDO - "doggish"
KRUDO - "coarse, rough"
KORPOFLARIO - "having a pleasant body smell"
REVIZINDO - "worth looking over"
BELMUSKOLO - "nice musculature"

I think it's pretty saccharine. But, on the other hand, there's no law that says you HAVE to use one of those names.

I somewhat agree here

In fact, I very much agree. They are very sexist. I prefer names with meanings like my light (Liora); Dove (Paloma); Anastasia (reborn), Liv (life) - but worhty of a caress?

I agree about the meanings; if that's my focus with a name or something that I'm considering, more universal ideas like peace or life or strength are infinitely more appealing than being 'kittenish' or some other simpering nonsense.
