[Opinions] Niobe
Niobe is one of my current favorites names, but I've never heard it discussed much or seen it used IRL, so I'm wondering...1. What would you think if you met a girl or woman named Niobe? What's your general impression of it?2. How would you instinctively pronounce it, if you just saw it written (ny-o-bee, nee-o-bee, or...)?3. Does it remind you of Naomi at all? If so, would you see that as a positive or a negative?

1. I think it's kind of awesome, though the mythological association is pretty bad. And it reminds me a lot of Nairobi.
2. ny-OH-bee
3. Not really, no. I love Naomi, though, so if it did I guess that would be a positive.

My only association is the mythological one - "Niobe, all tears" for having inadvertently caused the deaths of all her children. Not the best, therefore!NIE-oh-beeThree syllables, starts with N, ends with ee. Otherwise, no. I consider Naomi much more usable.

1. I’d probably be pleasantly surprised, but I did immediately think of Nairobi. Not a bad thing, but I keep thinking place rather than human name (even though I know Niobe isn’t).2. I’d say Ny-oh-Bee. It feels more natural and sounds more pleasant when I say it that way.3. I didn’t actually think of Naomi until I saw it, but now you mention it, I can see some confusion possibly arising.

1. I think Niobe looks and sounds beautiful. I would admire her parents creativity if I met someone with that name BUT the story of Niobe is so tragic that I probably wouldn't use it myself2. Ny OH bee3. It sounds a little like Naomi, but I like it much more

1. I would think she had a really good, intriguing, interesting name. 2. I honestly wouldn't know. I'd assume nee-OH-bay, but that's probably wrong.3. No, I don't think it's close to Naomi.

1. What would you think if you met a girl or woman named Niobe? What's your general impression of it?I love it, it has such a strong and cool vibe. It reminds me of the character played by Jada Pinkett Smith. Back when the Matrix trilogy was popular I probably wouldn't have felt comfortable using this name but that was so long ago that I would feel fine using this name now.
2. How would you instinctively pronounce it, if you just saw it written (ny-o-bee, nee-o-bee, or...)?I would pronounce it nie-o-bee/ ny-o-bee because that was how it was pronounced in the Matrix movie trilogy but I doubt that is the Greek pronunciation. Greek names are almost always mispronounced by those who speak English.
3. Does it remind you of Naomi at all? If so, would you see that as a positive or a negative? It reminds me a bit of Naomi, but it reminds me the most of the place name Nairobi. Personally I love the name Naomi and I like other Greek names that have a semi similar sound to Niobe like Phoebe etc... they have somewhere between a cool and a cute sound. I would love to meet a Niobe someday.

If I met somebody who used it I'd wonder if they were a fan of the TV show Rome. It was the name of the beautiful but ill-fated wife of Lucius Vorenus. It's a pretty name.

Huh, I like that show but I wouldn't remember her name.

My first thought was 'nye-OH-bee'.I like it! In fact, I haven't really thought of it before and it's quite refreshing to me. It's definitely my taste.Yes it sounds like Naomi, but I pronounce that 'nay-OH-mee'. I don't think that's a problem.

It's really nice. The story surrounding the mythical Niobe is tragic of course, but that makes the name more interesting to me. I would love to meet someone named Niobe. I'd assume her parents were somewhat geeky and/or had Greek heritage. Apparently there's a Niobe in the matrix trilogy, so I'd think a younger Niobe might have been named for that. My instinct is to pronounce is nie-o-bee.It does remind me of Naomi, but I really like Naomi, so it's a good thing, although I feel a real woman named Niobe might end up correcting people a lot.
