[Opinions] Atticus
WDYTO Atticus? Is it too pretentious? I'm trying to decide if it should stay a guilty pleasure.

My cousin just had a baby and named her son Atticus. It does seem a bit over the top, but also not. I mean, it is technically simple and easy to say and read... but it just has such glaring literary associations. That said, I asked my cousin if she really like the book and that is why she chose the name. She admitted that she has never read the book and they saw the name on a video game. So... for her, no association. I don't think it needs to be relegated to GP unless you feel strongly about it.

Atticus is the most cliche hipster name I can think of. I remember a while ago someone on here said that on one of those clean house shows on TV, whenever a hipster couple appeared on the show, they would have a son named Atticus. The name gives off that vibe of parents who think they're better than everyone else.

I really like it and it seems more mainstream / acceptabl3 as a name than it did 10 years ago. I think it's lost any prentiousnesss it may have had

I absolutely love it! Never used to, I have a friend who everyone called Attica (but actually spelt and said differently), so it felt weird to me. But I fell for it after a while, and it has the same fun, energetic, adventurous, boyish feel that I think a lot of my favourites have. Plus I heard it on Downton Abbey, which helped me imagine it on a real person. I don't think it's pretentious, but I don't care about that since many names I love are probably seen in the same way. It's much more trendy and seemed like #1 'hipster' name for a while. I wasn't sure about how it would be recieved after Go Set A Watchman (I haven't read either book), and had it as a gp. I remember talking to a friend about it, and how she felt kinda bad so many people had used it and then had it ruined. But I put it on the usable list after looking at a few threads and seeing it come back onto people's lists after a while. I probably wouldn't use it as a first because of trendiness/popularity or before reading the books, but it's a great name.

I think it's ok, but it's fairly trendy and unoriginal.

Not so much pretentious as derivative. The parents of an Atticus are basically trying to impress the public with their knowledge of one of the very few novels just about everyone has read at school.Better than Scout or Dill, though.

agreed ...scout is a cute name tho actually

I love it, maybe even enough to use if it wasn't getting so popular. It's definitely on trend right now, so I'd say the pretentious vibe is pretty much gone. But maybe non name nerds would think differently.

It doesn't surprise me anymore, at all. It was kind of cool ten years ago, but now it's played and unimaginative, and stereotypical hipster. Plus, the Atticus from "Go Set a Watchman" murders it for being a racist asshole. It's so sad that book exists.

I love it, and it's not pretentious at all. Considering who Atticus Finch was as a character, I think it's the exact opposite of pretentious.

I somewhat like it though definitely not enough to want to use it. I do feel that it has a pretenious feel to it but not so much that makes it unusable. It would make a good middle name I think. Of course it depends on the other names (the 1st and surname)Funny enough, I was just thinking about this name. Don't know why.
