Aside from sounding affected by a non-French speaker, calls to mind the word peon, which is like a sharecropper or serf.

I always thought it was PEE-e-nee too. I was just wondering because the comment section listed some other pronunciations. I was hoping that maybe the word was pronounced differently in different accents. I guess not :P

Where I live (French-speaking), the flower is generally called pivoine.
