Here in South Africa it gets a lot of use among Afrikaans-speakers: people see it as a girl version of Peter, which isn't accurate but who cares? They shorten it in lots of ways: Petro, Nellie or Nella usually, though I once knew a Nellsie.

I really like it, though I prefer Peronel.

Sounds like a candle scent/essential oil, like Citronella

I don't like any name that begins with Petr-, it always makes me think of the word "petrified".
