[Opinions] Re: Nana
in reply to a message by Perrine
Okay, now, when we discussed Poppy and I said it's a grandfather's name in the US, there were those who said it's not so commonly used as such these days. But Nana, now, there's no argument. Nana is a very common name for a grandmother, at least in the US. It's what her grandchildren called my mother. I can't see it at all as a name for that reason.
Even as a name for a grandmother, I never liked it. It's always made me think of a big fat woman in a white nurse's uniform. But it's what my mother wanted to be called...my niece took it upon herself to start calling my mother Nana, because it was the grandmother name used in her father's family, and for some reason my mother preferred it to Grammy. Blech. But I went along with it as that was what she wanted.

My grandchildren call me Nana. That's what their parents called my mother, and that's what I called my paternal grandmother. I like it.
My mother liked Nana. My siblings and I called our maternal grandmother Grammy, so I assumed that's what my mom would want to be called, but she said she hated Grammy. My grandchildren call me Grammy.
My mom is Mimi because Grandma sounded too old, she was 50 when she became a grandmother for the first time. My grandparents were Grandma / Grandpa but my parents are Mimi & Papa. It's from my sister's-in-law family.
I wonder what Alexander and I will use. X's parents are Grandma & Grandpa.

Old sounding...I was 45 when my first grand-child was born, in fact, the day after my 45th birthday.
I called my parental grandmother Nana, and my maternal grandparents Grandma Becky and Grandpa Jim. This had been well established by other grandchildren, I was one of the younger ones.
I don't mention my paternal grandfather, I never knew him, he died quite young. So I think of him rather formally, as Grandfather Lastname.
