[Opinions] Winston
Winston: Old and pretentious or underused and sweet?
Replies
I love Winston! I actually don't mind some pretention or upper class feeling to a name as long as it isn't too stuffy. I like Winston because I associate it with Winston Churchill. The nn's Win and Winnie are cute.
Winston isn't quite a top favorite but I do love it. I am uncertain if it makes my Top 50 but it might. It definitely is somewhere in the Top 100. I only have four favorite Top 20 names that I associate with loved historical figures. I love Malcolm because of Malcolm X, Quincy because of John Quincy Adams, Frida because of Frida Kahlo, and Dorothea because of Dorothea Lange.

Love it
It's my nephews name. At first I thought yuck, but i've warmed up to it and I adore it now. I would use it myself if it wasn't for him!

It's more on the old/pretentious side. Not as bad as some.
Winston is slightly tarnished by an association with the book 1984 and a cigarette brand. It's not sweet. But seems a bit less awkward than most -ton names, thanks to W. Churchill.
Mostly it seems trendily just another surnamey, placey -ton surname. Not really pretentious - Windsor would be pretentious - but maybe pretending to be pretentious. Preston, Easton, Weston, Kingston, Payton, Colton, Braxton, Ashton, Leighton ... so of *course* Winston too. Whether it's used a lot or a little, it still gives the trendy impression to me.
Overall I think it's fine, but I don't like it.

strangely ...
I read a sad news article yesterday where a young woman was found dying in her home, and she was able to ask the paramedics/police "Where's Winston?" before she died. Winston turned out to be her baby son who was found safe with his father, who is charged with killing the mother.
Terrible story, but I mention it because if somebody just asked me "Where's Winston?" and I didn't know who Winston was, I would be likely to think he was a dog or cat.
It just seems that comical and pompous. (The cat from Pet Sematary was named Winston Churchill.)

Thats where I saw the name, interestingly enough! And it caught my attention because I don't hear many babies named Winston.
it's my impression ...
From various trivia things I've read, that it was once a very popular name in Jamaica, and a lot of reggae musicians and DJ's non-stage names were Winston or Neville.
