Madonna just adopted 3-year-old twin girls from Malawi, and I found their names particularly interesting —
Esther and
Stella (no idea if those are her birth names, or if they were renamed by
Madonna).
I thought it was an interesting set for twins, since they are basically "twin" names: both mean "star", and
Stella was used by
Jonathan Swift as a "Latinate" form of
Esther. (Another random observation: that
Madonna's daughters all have names connected to the Virgin
Mary's appellations:
Lourdes,
Mercy, and now after "
Stella Maris" - I don't know if it's intentional or not to name all the women after "that"
Madonna!)
What do you think of the names? Do they fit well or are they too matchy for twins?
Personally, I think they are different enough to be considered separate names (like
Eve and
Zoe) rather than versions of the same name (like
Elizabeth and
Isabella).
Also, can you think of other names for twins (or multiples!) that have equivalent meanings in different languages?
