[Opinions] Matyelok
So I popped in my old "Rosemary & Thyme" Series 1 DVD (if you've never watched it, it's a gas), and during the credits for the pilot episode, I noticed that the actress who played barmy old Mrs. Potts is named... Matyelok Gibbs.
While the actress doesn't have a Wikipedia page, I did look her up on IMDb and saw that she played Louise in one of my favorite movies, "Ever After," so I was surprised that I hadn't recognized her. But in any event... Matyelok.
I have never before encountered this name. Does anyone know what it's from? My first guess is that it's somehow derived from a Dutch name. In any case, I find it quite bizarre, especially in my Midwest American accent.

Russian...
So, I found this in an article about 'Miss Potter'
"Matyelok Gibbs has spent a lifetime stealing scenes from people with far bigger roles than hers: like all great actors, she has mastered the look, the stillness that draws the eye far more than the flamboyant.
Gibbs – her first name Matyelok comes from her Russian mother "

Huh. If it is Russian, I'm guessing it originated as a diminutive, since I don't know of any Russian feminine names transliterated with the ending "-ok" (other posters had guessed the name was Hungarian).
Perhaps it's derived from Matrona, in that case?

I thought of Hungarian first, only because I know some very basic Hungarian and some words end in "-ok". I don't know as much about their names.
I just looked her up and she's also Aunt Muriel in Harry Potter, haha.

It looks like a variant of the surname Matlock.
