[Opinions] Re: Zechariah / Zachariah
in reply to a message by Howie
"Cool" name test: Go together to a local park on a Saturday morning and watch the parents and toddlers at the playscape, and picture yourselves as one of them, calling your own little diapered kid Azrael. Picture yourself calling a bank or a landlord and spelling your name, Azrael, for the person answering. If you still think it's cool, then I guess that's a go.Nate by itself is OK IMO, and if you called him that from birth and always signed him up for things as Nate unless you really had to put official Nathan, Nate would definitely stick.I agree with Bear about Zech / blech (and dreck and heck and fleck. It's a sound I spit out). Zachariah is better. I prefer Zachary nn Zack. Zack has cool factor for me, Zach does not. Zeke is too much of a stretch IMO and doesn't sound cool to me.
Zechariah could be Ry. Or Caz, but that's maybe as much a stretch as Zeke.
I agree with Llewella about the kind of people who'd use Zechariah / Zachariah.
They work OK with Cordelia.
Zara and Zechariah comes to mind- mirfak

Azrael is okay, just not for me. He's the one who likes it, and when I guessed why, he agreed, so that's what I'm basing the "cool" thing on. Plus, it's from his background, which is not Christian. It reminds me of a comic book character--Azazel, Nightcrawler's father. Azrael is the angel of death though, and so that just plain makes it a no go for me, even if the name were to be my style. I still think Nathaniel nn Nate could work. I'll just have to keep it on the back burner and bring it up here and there, I guess.Zeke actually sounds a little dorky to me, but it's okay enough. I was just thinking that maybe he would like the names because they have a Z in them.We actually have a number of girls' names that we can kind of agree on. He seems less interested on if the girls stand out for "weird" names than the boys, which I guess is pretty common in society.
