I like it in theory, but tend to be put off because of the "Gabrielle" pronunciation in many languages. Also, I don't think you will be able to ban a nickname. It will just happen, especially with strangers, friends, and he himself may want it.
About the high school thing. It would only be weird if we were good friends. If we are acquaintances, it doesn't matter.

My in-laws banned nicknames and it worked for all but one kid.

Panties in a wad because of our Lounge argument? I seriously didn't mean it as literal. If I had I would have admitted it to you. I honestly meant it as a "parents can steer people away from a nickname but if its going to happen its going to happen" sort of way.
