[Opinions] Gabriel
I haven't been able to get my mind off this name. It's quickly tied with my favorites - Paul, Thomas, Malcolm - but without any of the baggage the others have. (Personal baggage) Thoughts? The only problem is my husband has a cousin named Gabrielle nn Gabe, so I'd use the full name. (There are too many cousins in my husband's family to care about reusing names.)
Also - would you find it weird or odd if an old high school friend used the name of your siblings? My husband went to school with a Rebekah who had siblings named Tabitha, Susannah, Miriam and Samuel. Samuel and Tabitha are high on our list but my husband thinks it's awkward. Thoughts?

I love Gabriel. It's one of my favorite names and I'd seriously consider using it if I liked Gabe, which I really don't. Gabe is pretty inevitable in my opinion, regardless of your relative, unless he decides on his own that he doesn't want to be called Gabe.
As for your second question, I wouldn't weird at all. I would just figure they liked the name.

I like Gabriel and I think it goes beautifully with Miriam - a lot more so than Paul, Thomas or Malcolm.
And no I wouldn't think it was weird unless they are still very close friends. But even then it might be a coincidence.

I love Gabriel. I'd think it would be hard for Gabe not to be a nickname, though maybe I'm wrong.
I don't think that would be weird. It's not like they're your best friends. Maybe it would be weird if you used both of the names, but what are the odds of that?

I love Gabriel, I wish Kurt would warm up to it. I also think it makes a great sibset with Miriam.
I don't know... Are they still in touch? If not, I wouldn't even think twice about it. It would be no problem at all. I think I'd only mind if they were close, then it would be a bit awkward. Otherwise, not at all.

I wish my husband would warm up to more boys names as well. If we have a girl will be OK again as there are several girls names that we can agree. But a boy? Once again we just seem to be going in circles. Thankfully it is extraordinarily unlikely that we'll have another child. Alexander really likes names that I have issues with because I think they're too unusual and/or would cause problems - Malcolm, Raphael, Blaise, Constantine

It's much more heroic/angelic than your other favorites. Less human? haha
I like the name Gabriel more than I like most names I'd put in its category. Gabe is cool. I wouldn't say Gabrielle in a way that would lead to nn Gabe, though - she'd be a Gaby. I'd call a son Gabriel "Gabe" regardless of the cousin.
I wouldn't find it weird to know a family with the same sib names. Unless they were super rare, which they're not. It's just a coincidence, nothing more to think about, no need to make it awkward.

I'm not really sure how they pronounce Gabrielle to get Gabe. I had her on my FB. I do like Gabe but X won't use it.
Gabriel is one of my faves. It's so handsome, but like you, I'm not wild about Gabe either. Still, I don't think you'd necessarily have to worry about that. Re: the cousin, if he's a distant cousin, I wouldn't worry about the repetition.
As for your second question, no, that shouldn't be an issue, especially if your dh isn't close with his old friend from school.

Gabriel is very nice. Gabe isn't that great anyway.
Not remotely awkward. Are you even in touch with this family? It's not like they have coyprighted those names or something anyway.

Not awkward at all! I know someone who gave his daughter the same name as his sister, now that is awkward.
Love, love, love the name Gabriel! It's so handsome and gorgeous. I wouldn't care about other people I know using it. I also wouldn't care about the names of the siblings of someone I went to school with! I mean, who cares? Samuel and Tabitha are awesome together.
I like it in theory, but tend to be put off because of the "Gabrielle" pronunciation in many languages. Also, I don't think you will be able to ban a nickname. It will just happen, especially with strangers, friends, and he himself may want it.
About the high school thing. It would only be weird if we were good friends. If we are acquaintances, it doesn't matter.

My in-laws banned nicknames and it worked for all but one kid.
Anyway, I said we wouldn't use it, not that I'd ban it. Two very different things.

I wasn't using "ban" literally.
Yeah, you were. Don't even.
Panties in a wad because of our Lounge argument? I seriously didn't mean it as literal. If I had I would have admitted it to you. I honestly meant it as a "parents can steer people away from a nickname but if its going to happen its going to happen" sort of way.
But whatever, you have a chip on your shoulder so anything I say now is going to sound like I am being mean to you.

You must be scary as hell IRL.
This is my last reply yo you
I have said nothing g personal to you or have attacked you in any way. Nor am I going to.
The way you phrased the thread and the language you used made it seem as if you thought I was banning the nickname. If I was wrong, I apologize, but your wording is the problem

I have one! He's Gabriel Vincent. We mostly use Gabriel but sometimes boyfriend will call him Gabe.
So I am a little bit biased. ;-) I think it's handsome and I do love a good Biblical classic. It goes with anything, too; I was going to rattle off a couple of other combos that I liked but there was no end to it.

I think Gabriel is a nice name whether it's shortened or not, if you like it I'd go for it!
And on the high school friend thing, I guess it depends on the person and maybe the level of contact your husband still has with them? I don't think that there's anything wrong with using friends siblings names especially names that are reasonably well used (e.g. Samuel) which I doubt the friend would think "They copied my family names", more like it would come across as a coincidence.
Then again it's up to you. By the way I think Samuel and Tabitha are really nice names
