A comment in the Lounge reminded me of this...
My grandmother is called Grandma Butterfly.
She adores butterflies. She has several butterfly tattoos, butterfly-themed trinkets and furniture all over her house, and wears butterfly jewelry or clothes with butterflies on them daily.
Years ago we were thinking of using Mariposa as a name or middle name for a girl. It is technically the Spanish word for "butterfly".
So what do you all think?
Would Mariposa make a decent name for a girl?
Do you think it would have served well to honor Gram (real name Lila)?

I used to like Mariposa with possible nn Posey. Now for some reason whenever I see it I think of marscarpone (and I didn't know it was used as a derogatory word for gay men before), so that's off-puting.
I still think it's an ok name, but I think I'd actually prefer just using Butterfly in English, as a middle name...or something that's associated with butterflies but not as directly linked (like, you could maybe use Zinnia because people plant zinnias to attract butterflies).
I also really like Lila by itself.

I like it an GPish way. I don't think it's really useable and it's a stretch to use it for honoring purposes, stick with Lila or a similar sounding name.

I didn't know about the slang term either, but I don't like it because a butterfly's an insect. It's not symbolic enough to compensate for that, as far as I'm concerned. Not even if I count the grandparent's obsession. heh. If it were me being named I'd rather have the name Lila.

Eek, no. It's a very derogatory slang term for a gay man in many Latin American countries. I just can't get past that association. Lila is way better.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I've never heard of it being slang for anything but that might just be the area I'm from. Then again, it might be a similar word. Either way, I'd check.

As far as butterfly names go, I've always preferred Papillon, but I think Mariposa is very sweet. I think it might be too precious in the first spot (my opinion could always change upon meeting one, though), but I think it'd make a dynamite middle name.

Mariposa is a pretty word, but I think it's also a slang term for a gay person? And Lila is so much prettier. I'd use Lila Butterfly or something...or Lila+ Butterfly name, like Lila Erynnis, Lila Eufala, Lila Hesperia, Lila Junonia, Lila Thessalia, etc.
