What do you think of Jean for a girl? I used to love it only as a vehicle for the nn Jeanie. But lately Jean itself is beginning to capture my attention. It's so sleek and no-nonsense. But it also feels warm and friendly to me. Do you agree or disagree? Do you think it could ever make a comeback? Just for fun, throw some combos at me. Thanks!

I like it very much - it's a what-you-see-is-what-you-get name. The Jean people in my family are about 70 and about 55. But I'd love to meet a young one.Jean Elizabeth

That's the spirit! We think alike on this one. Just because a name is used in an older generation doesn't mean that it wouldn't be a kick in the pants to see on a younger person. Loving:Jean Elizabeth (would have used this when I was seriously considering using the name on a future dd)

Ha, it's my name. Actually, it's Kathryn Jean (that spelling for Kathryn), however, I've always gone by Jean, that was my parents' choice.
I like my name.
Where I live, a French -speaking area, it's often mistaken for a male name, as there are plenty of Jeans, Jean-Guys,Jean-Louis.But never mind, I still like it.

Lucky you. :-) Kathryn Jean / Jean Kathryn is very romantic sounding to me. I can hear the Scottish brogue. I'm glad you think it's worth the effort of living amongst all those hunky Jean-Marcs, etc., in your area.

I like it. Its sweet and spunky. Its also a family name (my great grandmother's first name) for me. I definitely agree with your view. I am not sure if It will make a comeback. I have seen Jane more, so its possible.
Jean Annabel was my first thought. Annabel Jean is my combo.

I don't mind it, but I wouldn't use it. I prefer Jane, June, and Joan all to Jean. Jean sounds the harshest of them. I could see it making a minor comeback, though, along with the others.

Jane, Joan and June are great too. Joan was my favorite aunt's name, so I particularly hope you're right on that one. Thanks for the feedback. :-)

It's okay.. I don't see why it couldn't make a comeback since it's simple and so close to Jane. I don't really want it to make a comeback though. This name to me is like John, so damn boring you barely pay attention when the person introduces themselves to you

John is interesting to me because it's become rare -- at least on name boards. lolThanks for the input. All opinions are valid. I wanted to get a gauge on how Jean would be received. :-)

Yeah sorry that was negative. It just bores me a little, even though it isn't common. I prefer it as a middle name. It could be spunky on the right girl but I think if it were on a shy timid mousy girl it wouldn't do her any favours.And John isn't popular for kids these days where I live but there are so so so many adults and middle aged people called John its ridiculous. Too me it sounds like no thought was put into their name. i feel the same way about Mark

I think its okay. I prefer Jeanne with the option of pronouncing it either way. But it is a friendly name. It could come back. I don't see it as sleek though.Jean Moriah

I think it's kind of harsh looking, a bit anemic. I don't much get a friendly vibe from it - it's like a too-tight bun hairdo and glasses perched on a long nose, distilled into a name. I prefer Jeanne, said like Jean. Gives it a Hollywood Golden Age flair. On second thought, after musing on it for a bit, I can appreciate it for what it is. It has an abrupt honesty to it; a kind of openness. Here are some combos:Jean Minerva

lolGreat description of Jean. I could almost feel my hair tightening as I read it. :-P My only problem with the Jeanne spelling is the pronunciation. If I knew it would be pronounced like Jean I would embrace it. But I knew too many girls growing up who pronounced Jeanne with two syllables, like Jeanie. It irked me. But yes, the Jeanne spelling is visually softer and does have Old Hollywood glamour. Loving:Jean Minerva -- so Noel Coward

Jean Amanda was the one that got me thinking Jean might not be so bad after all! It snapped me out of my anti-Jean rut. I am crushing on that combo pretty hard.

Meh, I'm not a fan. It's too plain for me and far too common. Besides, it's the name of my MIL. 'Nuff said. ;-)I do have one good friend (Sarah Jean) who goes by Jeanie. The name suits her.Could Jean make a comeback? It's possible yet it's still a pretty common mn. I can actually see Jane making a comeback before Jean. I could be wrong, though.

OK. MIL trumps all. I agree about Jane making a comeback before Jean. Jane has the advantage of being the name of queens and authors. Poor Jean seems to be always stuck in the mn spot. Ah, well. Thanks for the feedback. It's all appreciated.

Where I live Jean is actually a pretty famous historic name. She was a big deal because she was a pilot and broke lots of flying records and she was also a woman in the 30's being a pilot which is pretty unheard of. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_BattenSo there is that one namesake.. probably not too well known in other parts of the world I'd say

Jane is beautiful too. Jeanne is tricky for me. I'm never sure how to pronounce it in English. Do you say "jeen" like Jean, or "JEE-nee," like Jeanie, or some other way? Just curious. Thanks!

I don't really care for the nn Jeanie (reminds me of I Dream of Jeanie too), although I quite like Jean. I agree that it's a no-nonsense name. Quite a strong name.Jean May

I don't like it. The only people I know with this name are between 50 and 90 years old. I guess it could make a come back though. The nickname Jeanie seems like something people would use today.Jean Adina

And what's wrong with 50 to 90 year olds, young lady? This 49 year old would like to know. Don't worry. It took me this long to fall in love with Jean. It can't be everyone's cup of tea. :-)Jean Muriel is wonderful. Why didn't I think of that one? You're pretty good at this for not liking Jean. :-) I'm also loving Jean Lucetta (unexpected), Jean Marianna and Jean Silvia. I guess I'm hoping for the next round of names to make a comeback being the Art Deco, 1920s-1940s type names. *sigh*

It's okay and I can see why you get a warm feeling from it, but I find it kind of dated - probably because the only Jean I know is about 60. I can't really imagine it on a little girl, so I prefer Jane, Jeannie or Janey.

It doesn't feel warm or friendly at all to me. Jean is cold, dank, and plodding. I really dislike it and hope it doesn't make a comeback.
