It's kind of a double edged sword for me when this kind of question arises. One the one hand, for example, "Harry Potter" books have introduced a whole new generation to great names like Hermione and Ginevra. But I worry that these names will forever be type cast as these characters, not as names in general. On balance, I do think it's a positive thing, but yes, the danger is there.For you, Edward is very historic name with so many associations that I wouldn't think the Twilight factor overshadows it. Plus, if you plan on using a cute nn like Ned the Twilight factor gets even smaller. Go for it if you love it. There are a gazillion names that I love, but only a handful that have grown deep enough roots in my heart that I would use them on a real child. You may regret it if you don't use Edward. Oh, and tell your friends to get out more. :-)
