Has Edward been ruined by Twilight? I really like the name, especially with the nickname Ned. But I've told a few friends about it and their first association is always Twilight. It has been in use for a very very long time and I guess that association will fade. It mainly makes me think of Edward IV.
What do you think of the name? Do you like Ned?

People who don't know a lot about how name popularity works frequently assume that Twilight has ruined names. When I told my friends that Jacob and Isabella were the number one names in 2010, they said "Oh because of Twilight". No, because Jacob has been number one since 1999 and because Isabella was popular anyway and Emma fell enough.
The name is a classic, the association will fade, and no one is going to think Ned = Twilight.
I like Edward, it's very handsome. I don't like any of it's nicknames particularly though.

Names can always be ruined by an association, no matter their previous popularity. Dick was definitely ruined by association and that was an extremely common nickname before the 60s. Same with Fannie and Fanny which were popular before the 20s.
Twilight was extremely common and I just feel that a whole generation is thinking 'sparkly vampire' when they hear Edward. Suddenly all its history doesn't seem to matter anymore. It doesn't help that it's not as common anymore. Jacob and Isabella are so common that the association isn't that strong but Esme, Rosalie and Edward are more strongly tied to the books. Edward is still used quite a bit, it places around #150 (too lazy to look it up) but not common enough that it would be free of those associations.
I've decided I just don't really care as people will not make the connection with Ned. And yeah, maybe it will fade. I hope so.

I like Ned for a nickname.

Edward is a fine name, and Edward IV was a worthy namesake, though I can't say the same for most of the other King Edwards!
I had a great-uncle Edward who was known as Ted. No offence to the old gentleman, but I much prefer the lighter and more elegant Ned.

I like the name, but am disappointed that Twilight has kind of scarred it... Fortunately, it has enough history that it may well outlast that and maintain its dignity.

I like Edward in theory. It feels handsome and distinguished.
But in real life, I think he would be Ed or Eddie, which feel dated and lower class.

Gosh, I would certainly hope a classic like Edward hasn't been "ruined" by a trendy book series no one will be reading in 30 years. Are your friends young teen girls, the target audience for Twilight? Because then it would make sense that the books would be their first association.
Personally, I dislike every name I can think of that starts with Ed-. I guess it's just not my thing. I don't care for Ned either.

They're in their 20s, but were teenagers when the books were released. It isn't their only association but it is what comes to mind first. I don't even think they're fans of Twilight, most are just annoyed by it and Edward has negative associations for them.

I don't associate it with Twilight that much. It's a very old and classic name with hundreds of famous namesakes, almost all of them better than Cullen! Maybe right now some people think of that, but in 10 years time when he's at school it will be less of a common association (one hopes!).
I know a few younger boys called Edward and I think it's very handsome. However, I don't like any of the nicknames. Ed sounds too grown up for a child, Ned makes me think of a house, and or Ned Flanders, Ted is ok but I feel it works better for Theodore.
For me, the Ned Flanders association is much stronger than Edward Cullen because Ned is less common and had fewer famous users

It's kind of a double edged sword for me when this kind of question arises. One the one hand, for example, "Harry Potter" books have introduced a whole new generation to great names like Hermione and Ginevra. But I worry that these names will forever be type cast as these characters, not as names in general. On balance, I do think it's a positive thing, but yes, the danger is there.
For you, Edward is very historic name with so many associations that I wouldn't think the Twilight factor overshadows it. Plus, if you plan on using a cute nn like Ned the Twilight factor gets even smaller.
Go for it if you love it. There are a gazillion names that I love, but only a handful that have grown deep enough roots in my heart that I would use them on a real child. You may regret it if you don't use Edward.
Oh, and tell your friends to get out more. :-)

The name has been in my family for generations but I still think of Twilight first. I think it's because I'm still surrounded by it--fans and haters alike keep it going. But has the movie ruined it, I don't think so. By the time your little Edward grows up, hopefully Twilight will just be a part of our shameful past.
Personally, I love the name Edward. I didn't used to because it just made me think of old men (ala my family) but I've grown to love it. And Eddie is a cute nickname but I could see if someone refused to go by it.
Ned is absolutely horrible and ugly. Ned. There isn't even an "n" in Edward. Ned sounds like a nerd who will have psychological scarring from years of mental and physical abuse in school. Ned. I just dislike it.

Well, I don't think it's been ruined by Twilight but then I never got into Twilight. Never read the books or saw any of the movies. I think you're right...the association will fade. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
I think it's an okay name, but I prefer it in the middle name spot. As a fn, it definitely needs a nickname. I've never heard of Ned as a nn for Edward. I don't love Ned...it kind of has the same too old-fashioned feel that Edward has. I like the classic Eddie nn better.

Nope. Edward is far too classic of a name to be ruined by any cultural fad, imo. Personally, I think of the beautiful Prince Edward Island. It's an absolutely gorgeous province. I don't think you can go wrong with Edward. ^_^
I like Ned. It's sweet and cute. I slightly prefer Eddie, but Ned is just as good.
