I think it's hideously ugly either on its own or as a nickname, but I'd rather know a Gus at least has the option of a full name to use.
It just sounds gross, like a big fat guy with bad gas. Or a dog with bad gas. I always wondered why the series of children's books "Walter the Farting Dog" wasn't "Gus the Farting Dog."
