[Opinions] Gladys
Speaking of names going exinct . . . what do you think of the name Gladys?

Gladys lives! To my surprise, I know a Gladys in her early 20s - very talented artist now studying architecture. What makes it amazing is that she was born in the DR Congo and lived there until the age of about 3, speaking French and the local language. There's a video of her as a toddler, talking to her grandparents in a language she no longer remembers.
It's less dated, for me, than Janice but not as lively as Alice.

I just had a look to see if it was still in use here and practically all the Gladyses born in the UK since 1984 have had African last names. Nice to see it's still going strong somewhere.
It's okay. Not really my style.
I love Gladys! At one time I was in discussion with someone who wanted to open a 50's style diner and we talked about what our "diner names" would be and I picked Gladys because it has similar sounds to my own name (4 of the same letters - "adys"). I warmed up to it after that, and do like the "glad" in there... It's like I can't say the name without smiling.
And then I started watching "Bomb Girls" (about a munitions factory in the 40s) where the main character's name is Gladys. She's sort of working out of being the pampered rich girl and is really spunky and beautiful. Her father calls her "Glady" on the show :)

I sorta like it, but I have to wonder if I'm being ironic. It's cool, isn't it??
I like it. It's not pretty, and it's not super-feminine, but I like it. It doesn't need frills.
I thought it was completely unworkable until I met a young Gladis. Now, I like it. It's a bright, happy name. I guess I just needed a little help to move past its dowdy, crotchety image so I could appreciate the sound of it.

It has kind of an old-fashioned glamour to it, but I don't really like it and I'm glad it isn't my name.
Love, love it. It began as a wallflower for me. I tend to seek names that are overlooked and considered unusable. Well, they need love too. And gradually I began to fall under her spell. It has "glad" right in the name. And it conjures up a flowery, country feeling. Gladys Hermione and Gladys Matilda are my current stock combinations for it. :-D
