[Opinions] Alexander
Plain, boring, overused? I used to think so, but for a long while Alexander has been in one of my top combos as the middle name and ha now begun to grow on me.
I don't hate Alex but I'd rather not my child have such a common name, and I like Xander as I name in it's own right, so what do you think of Lex? Plausible on a boy as a nickname for Alexander? What do you think? :)

I've known an Alexander that we've called Lex for years. He's probably around 23 or 24 and he gets along fine with it. I've never really put a lot of thought into it before now.
I adore Alexander and Alex is cool. Xander isn't my style.
My favourite Alexander short form is Sasha.
I used to know a boy who went by Zane for short which is a stretch, I guess, but it worked for him.
My sister says she would use Anders.

I really like Alexander, especially since its variants are common in my immediate family. I'm definitely planning on using it as a middle name and used to consider it for a first name a couple of years ago.
Xander is okay, except I'm not a big fan of it. My favourites would probably be Sander or Sascha.

Lex lacks appeal. Alexander is overused, and although I've got an excellent Alexander nephew who used to go by Xander and has switched to Alex, if it were me I'd either name a child Alec with no options (control freak, me!) or name him Alexander and resolutely call him Sandy.

I love Alexander. I think it's a handsome classic. I don't find it boring BECAUSE it's not overused in my area. I really don't come across as many as I'd expect. As for nicknames, I personally think Alex is great on a boy. I think Lex absolutely can work as well. Other nicknames for Alexander I like are Ali and Sasha, but they might not be to your taste. I would not use Xander as a nickname because it seems like a complete name on its own.
I would only use Alexander if I could use the nn Lex! Alexander is classic and suits a ton of personality types, but I dislike Alex. Lex seems more spunky on a child and handsome on an adult. I know an Alexander nn Lex in his early 20s, so my opinion may be colored a bit.
It's definitely not plain, but it has become boring through overuse. I love it, actually, but would never ever use it because it's been done to death.
Using Lex as a nickname rather than Alex does give it some freshness. I know someone who did that. Well, she named her son James Alexander, because James was the father's name, but she called him Lex. Although the nickname gives it some freshness, I just don't like it. Makes me think of either a big dumb professional wrestler or an effeminate man.

Love! It's my favorite boy name and has been for years! I have a love-hate with Lex and I've always loved Alex. Lex is perfectly fine to use for Alexander, it's definitely different.
Alexander isn't plain although it is overused. I still like it and the nns Alec and Xan which seems to come quite naturally to me (really dislike Xander). If I named my son Alexander, I have no doubt I'd be calling him Xan even if no one else did.
Lex is too Lex Luther for me. It's not horrible, though.

My mother's mn is Alexandra, so Alexander shows up in a lot of my combos. I don't care about general popularity, but I personally know more than a few little Alexanders (plus at least one "just Alex," a Lex, a few Xanders/Zanders, and more girls than I care to count named Alexandra, Alexandria, Alexis, Alexa, Alexia, and Lexi) so it is too overused for me to use it as first name. I don't think it's plain or boring, though, and I do like it.
Xander is still too Buffy for me. There's something self-conscious about Xander, like it's trying too hard to be cooler than Alex, maybe. Lex works well, though I don't really like it. I much prefer it as a nn for Alexander than as a standalone.
Alex is always going to be my favorite nn, for boys or girls, for this whole family of names, but I also really like Sandy, particularly for a boy.

Hate Alexander, but I love Alex.
I think I'm the only person on BtN who loves Alex for a boy or a girl. Most people seem to hate it, but I don't know why. I think it's a good name.
