Jake met Don on his first day in New York. Jake had just left the air port and was dying to find somewhere to sleep. Only problem was, he had not sorted out where he would stay yet. An aspiring singer/songwriter from Prague, Czech Republic, with a big dream and a semi-tuned guitar, he had gone to USA with the scraps of money he had saved up after graduating from high school. He took the bus into town and had a coffee at the first cafe he could find. Enter Don, a coffee enthusiast who had just opened his own cafe. Unfortunately, business wasn't going great since all his customers seemed to prefer Starbucks. But Don had an idea! If he could get local, talented musicians and bands to perform at his cafe a couple of times per week, maybe that would bring more customers! He saw a young guy, with tousled hair and a guitar bag over his shoulder, enter his cafe and thought he might as well ask...
"You want me to play here? Really? You haven't even heard me play yet!" Jake said in his Czech accent and Don couldn't help but smile. The accent was really disarming.
Said and done - Don hooked Jake up at a friends flat, who needed an extra roommate, and Jake agreed to play at the cafe next Wednesday. Jake was an immediate success with his boyish charm, adorable accent and heartfelt love songs. Don and Jake continued to collaborate and became friends over coffee and guitar tuning. One day Jake confessed that the reason he had left Prague was because he had told his parents he was gay, and they had freaked out. Don said that he could understand what he had been through, since his parents had had a similar reaction when Don had come out as bisexual.
"I didn't want to tell you why I left Prague, but I figured I kind of had to, since there is one more thing I have to say," Jake continued. "I think I really like you, and I ... I wanted to tell you that, even if it will ruin our friendship. I'm sorry."
But Don felt the same way and now they have been dating for over three years and are looking forward to start a family.
