The surname Currie was adopted by some Scottish Gaels who were originally called MacMhuirich, on account of the latter name being pronounced 'Acurrie' in the Gaelic dialect of the area in which they lived. MacMhuirich is a patronymic based on the old Irish male given name Muiredhach, which in Scotland was anglicised Murdoch or Murdo. I believe that another Gaelic forname, Murchadh, was also anglicised as Murdo(ch), but I'm not certain.
The original Curries derived their surname from a place name of the Edinburgh district.
