[Opinions] Re: How would you pronunce this?
in reply to a message by Array
I have family in Athenry. What a nice thought for a name. My only concern is the pronunciation. "athen-rye"Perhaps I'm just conditioned, but when I first saw Juleanne I immediately thought it was Julianne. To get the pronunciation you want, the only practical way that I can think of is to make it "Jewel Anne."

To get the pronunciation you want, the only practical way that I can think of is to make it "Jewel Anne." One problem: With my Midwestern accent, Jewel is two syllables! Similar to the way that Lyle is LYE-ull for me, Jewel is about like JOO-wull.The reason I like Athenry so much is because of the song "Fields of Athenry." The song itself is sad but hopeful, and the image it gives me is of togetherness and absolute joy--it's one we sing every year at St. Patrick's Day.Array
And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore
The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question

I love that song!"Nothing matters Mary when you're free," and I get a tear in my eye.
