That is a misconception about the Russian Royals. They didn't live as grandly as we thought. The grand Duchesses slept on camp cots and took cold baths (hot running water was availible). Their father only let them have hard Russian Bread for breakfast. Their maids were only there to watch them as THEY cleaned their rooms and made their beds.
Tsar
Nicholas was very sympathetic too his people and desprately tried to help them. I blame Rasputin for their down fall.
They did live in Grand palaces, but didn't live the grand life (which Tsarina
Alexandra didn't like. She missed her life in Hesse).
