We're pretty well accustomed to Vickie and Torey, various spellings ad lib. But yesterday I found a new one: there's a newly appointed national Police Commissioner here in South Africa, first woman to hold the position, who is usually known as Ria; it turns out that she's actually a Victoria.
Ria is widely used here as a nn for Maria, often in compound forms (Rialette, a merger of Maria and Aletta, is very familiar) but that's an Afrikaans habit and the new Commissioner isn't Afrikaans.
