I've never cared for Amalia. I really hear the word "maul" in it, and it reminds me of Somalia.
I think people would grasp that Amalia is not Amelia eventually, but, yes, I do think it would be mistaken for Amelia more often than you would like, especially considering Amelia's growing popularity. If you hate Amelia that much, Amalia would probably be a risky choice.
