Yozora - the night sky
Never met or heard of anyone named this... prob'ly either old or rare
Aoi- blue, or mallow (I think what she has written here means that if it means "blue" it's feminine, and if it means "mallow" it's masculine?)
Both blue and the plant kanji can be and are frequently used for girls. It's kinda popular in recent years. Never heard of a boy with this name. It is among the names I like... but only for girls.
Asahi - the morning sun
Don't know that anyone uses this name these days... It's the name of a newspaper chain and a drink company.
Kisaki - a queen or empress
Never heard of anyone w/ this name either... maybe rare or not common these days
Himawari - sunflower
I've met one. It's cute and I like it.
Ringo - apple
Rare... never encountered this one
Ai - love
Pretty standard... USUALLY a girls' name, but I met a boy with this name last week... His dad was named Megumi (and so was his mum) and his little brother was Mari (truth), so I asked if they have a girl, do they plan to name her Akira (usually a boys' name, but occasionally used on girls... guess I could have mentioned Tsubasa as well since that's also usually for boys, but can occasionally be for girls as well).
Hime - princess
Pretty rare these days.
Akane - madder
Never heard of that meaning for the name, but it can vary depending on the kanji a family chooses.
Mirai - the future
A friend of mine has a daughter w/ this name... It's kinda modern and trendy... nmsaa.
Sumire - violet
Pretty... Not overused, but there are some... didn't realize that was the flower it was the name of... will have to look into that...
Ichigo - strawberry
I know someone with a DOG named Ichigo... and someone who uses that as her code name on fb, but don't know of any PEOPLE with that as their real name.
Miyako - city
Hmmm... maybe city child... but there are many possibilities for this one depending on which kanji are chosen.
Yume - dream
Sounds a tad trendy... not really standard... never met one.
Kokoro - mind, heart
Had a student with this name, so I know of at least ONE that really exists... Not very common though.
Hinata - a sunny place
Have a student w/ this name I think (we all just call her Hina)... not very common.
Boys:
Tsubasa - wing
One of my fave Jpns. boys' names... and yes, quite common... can occasionally be used for a girl as well... I know 1 woman by this name.
Yuki - brave
Kinda common
Kakeru or Sho - soar
Don't think I've ever met a Kakeru, but lots of guys named Sho or other names w/ Sho in them... various kanji though... In some cases this would apply.
Hikaru - shine
Can be for boys or girls... First Hikaru I ever knew was a girl, but I think it's more common on boys. I did have a 2nd student w/ this name as well though... so this is opposite in my case I guess. Think I've maybe only met 1 boy Hikaru I can remember off the top of my head.
Ryu - dragon
Multiple kanji, but yes, dragon is 1 of the possibilities.
Zen - everything or right
Don't think I've met one of these.
Seiya - star and night
Don't think I've met this one either
Minoru - bear fruit
Can also mean seed/fruit or ripen... depends which kanji a person chooses.
Daichi - the earth
? Haven't encountered that kanji for Daichi, though Daichi is quite a common name and there are likely many possibilities...
Taiki - big tree
Yeah... that's 1 of the multiple possible kanji combos for this one.
I really like Mirai. Such a lovely meaning and such a beautiful sound. WDYT?
I think it's a tad on the trendy over the top side... nmsaa. It's in the same category as Kaden and Jaden on a girl and stuff like that... It's doable, but makes me kinda shake my head. It kinda makes a person immediately think "young parents?"
