[Opinions] Gloria
So this is a name I've loved for a long time, but haven't really thought about using because it seemed too Catholic for a Jewish baby (which any girl I have will be). However, I keep running into Jewish Glorias -- all of whom are over the age of 75. I love that the name is feminine, relatively unique, and pretty multicultural; for me, it conjures up an image of a field of sunflowers.
What are your thoughts on the name? Is it too old? Too Catholic? Too weird? And what middle names would you use with it? Thanks!!

My m-i-l is named Gloria Jean so I've never thought of it as too Catholic. Also, the very few I've known in my lifetime weren't too anything so Gloria doesn't project any image to me at all. It's just a name -- a tad dated at that. Having said that, it is quite nice and could make a comeback and I'm baffled why my m-i-l would rather go by her mn and drop Gloria completely which is what she did when she married (even her headstone is pre-inscribed without it). She has never used it again which is a shame as I'd much rather be Gloria than Jean. Re: mns, I'd prefer something short and sweet.
I think Gloria is due for a resurgence. It's sophisticated and rather glamorous, I think. I am Catholic, and I like it as a religious-inspired name, but I don't think it's necessarily a Catholic-only name. Can't really think of a name I think is Catholic only, but maybe I'm culturally biased.
The only Gloria I've met personally is my grandmother's cousin, whose name is Gloria Mary. I like Gloria Mary quite a bit. Though our Gloria is elderly, I don't think Gloria is an "old people" name. Old-fashioned names seem to be making a bit of a come-back anyway.
Here are some combos:
Gloria Madeleine
Gloria Matilda
Gloria Alexandrine
Gloria Amaryllis
Gloria Violet
Gloria Constance - I know this all words, but I love it
Gloria Catherine
Gloria Genevieve
Gloria Juliet

Oh I do love Gloria and the name's been on my mind even more lately! It has an eternally sunny feel to it - like a field of sunflowers, as you said. Though I often think of morning glorys :)
It think it's rather timeless and will age incredibly well. Haven't given much thought to MNs so I think maybe I'll have to steal some from the responses. Gloria Faline is my go-to

I don't think it's too Catholic at all. At least in the Church I think of it as a hymn more than as a name. In any case it's really beautiful and has a lovely vintage feel, but it's known enough that I don't think anyone would have trouble with it.

I like Gloria. It's a respectable name that is dignified without sounding stuffy. It almost seems playful. It fits a multitude of personalities; it would work for a doctor, lawyer, actress, dancer, secretary, a talkative person, a shy person, you name it.
I don't find it too weird, too old, or too Catholic. It's not overly popular, but not bizarre by any means. I'll bet that most people in most English-speaking countries have at least heard of the name Gloria if they haven't met at least one person with the name.
If someone I knew had a daughter and named her Gloria, I'd be thrilled by the naming choice.

I love it. It was on our short list for this baby. We liked Gloria Jacqueline as a combo.
I am a Christian, though not catholic, but I don't think it has overly religious connotations. I think it could totally work for a Jewish baby.

I like it. It's got an old vibe, yes, but I think it's charmingly retro as opposed to horribly dated. I have never thought of it as being particularly "Catholic;" as a non-religious person I would have no problem using it.
