I've always thought Marian was pretty, too. It does have this really deep, mature quality to it, and it's velvety and deep red and black. It's very sensual. I only like that spelling when on a girl.
Marion I think looks more masculine, so that's the spelling I consider to be the boy version. I like it on a boy, too.
I think people would spell it Marian. That's by far more common I think.

Yeah I agree that Marian has a very mature quality to it and a feminine quality. Marion feels more unisex to me and also less mature since it reminds me of Marionberries. Marionberries are delicious but it kind of reminds me of Huckleberry Finn or Huckleberry Hound or Strawberry Shortcake since they are the only characters I know of with berry names. Whenever I see Marion I think of Marionberries. When I was younger I didn't realize that Marionberries are only a commonly grown berry in the Pacific Northwest.
