I automatically think "girl" since it's so popular for girls where I live, but it's close to Christian, and Christen is a masculine name in Denmark and Norway, so I don't think that Kristen is that outlandish for a boy. People would assume that he was a girl at least where I live, though. I only have knowledge about its popularity for girls in the U.S., so it's hard for me to gauge how it would go over as a masculine name where you're at. If it's not that weird as a masculine name in Australia or if it's just altogether uncommon for both genders, then I think it would be okay.
