[Facts] Shibin (male)
My friend is interested in finding out the meaning of his name. He is Indian but says he has also met a few Korean and other Asians named Shibin, though I'm thinking it is an Indian origin. While doing a google search I've found a city named Shibin/Shebin El Kom in Egypt but I don't know if it is related or not. If you have any information or any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.Thank you :)Edit: Apparently Shibin can be male or female.http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/70608 *interesting-meaning names

I suppose this name has its origin to the Sanskrit word "Shiven" which means "by Shiva." I have heard this name in a couple of new Hindi films. "Shibin" or "Shiben" might be its corrupted pronunciation.Besides the way Bengalis pronounce Dhirendra as Dhiren, Narendra as Naren, Vinay as Binoy etc. it could be a "form" of Shivendra as well.

I was actually wondering whether it is related to the Sanskrit word shibi/shivi of uncertain etymology, but used as a name from the Rgvedic period to the classical Sanskrit period. In particular, it was the name of a king who decided to give his body as equivalent flesh to protect a dove who asked shelter from a hawk who demanded the king had no right to take away his food. The problem is that the Keralite Chrstians choose their names from a wide variety of sources, and the name might not even be of Sanskrit origin.

Unfortunately, India is too diverse to hazard a guess. Two pieces of information will help enormously: his linguistic and religious affiliations (i.e., the linguistic and religious affiliation of the group the name possibly originates from, not whether he is a believer :-)

I asked him for specifics. He is South Indian, the language is Mayalayam and the religion associated should be Marthomite Christian.

Hi, My name is Shibin too. In my case,my parents decided my name by taking the first few letters from my mothers name and the first one letter from my fathers name.and they never thought about having a particular meaning behind it, and i guess it is the same in the case of most malayalee christians who have names such as Shibin, Jibin, Vibin , Nibin, Tibin, Mebin, Jobin, Tebin, Febin, Libin etc. Moreover, It was kind of a trend that came out after the name sachin as in 'Sachin Tendulkar' became popular with an 'in' in it.
