The news that
Queen Sola would be able to have no more children was devastating. Sola knew that as a
Queen, she had failed her kingdom. Leor was sad for his wife, but supported her and encouraged her to show that she was still a strong leader.
Sola tried to show her strength, but in reality, she was extremely weak from the birth of her last daughter. She often stayed in bed until noon and then spent only an hour or so on with the advisers.
When
Princess Eliora was four,
Queen Sola suddenly started to feel more weak than usual. She gave temporary control of the Kingdom over to her husband Leor, so she could rest. When the
Queen's sickness persisted, many doctors came to the palace, hoping to gain wealth by curing Sola, however, the second doctor to arrive had news that was both a blessing and a dangerous sign. The queen was pregnant again.
Sola knew that she was unlikely to live much long, for she could tell how weak she was feeling. The doctors told her that she had no choice but to complete her pregnancy; anything else would mean certain death.
A bit of mystery surrounds Sola's pregnancy. She was so utterly bewildered to find out she was expecting and kept claiming that there was no way she could be having another baby. Many doctors thought this was just denial, however, when
King Leor also claimed that he didn't see any way that Sola could be expecting, rumors began to circulate. Had the
Queen taken a lover? Though that seemed the most likely possibility to many, the queen had been ill and not in good enough health to carry out such a clandestine affair. Even when confronted in private by her husband, Sola claimed that there was no chance she could be having a child. Leor believed that Sola would never intentionally have an affair and could think of several ways Sola could have gotten pregnant, however, he wondered a fever, which had occurred a few months earlier might have addled her memory of the potential incident.
No one was expecting the
Queen to go into labor so early. She was out on a rare visit to the city around the palace when she suddenly collapsed and was rushed to her doctors. Many hours later, she gave birth to a healthy, but tiny prince. Soon after, with her husband at her side, she died. Quickly, the doctors rushed to deliver her other two babies and thankfully, they were alive.
A grieving Leor named his three new children.
Prince Rafael, nicknamed
Rafe, was given a middle name to honor his mother.
Princess Liana (
Lia) took the dead queen's first name.
Princess Sanara (San) was also given one of her mother's names.
Just after the
Queen's lavish funeral, the
Royal Advisers took the
King aside. He was to act as regent, they said, until the new heir could arrive. As
Queen Sola had been the only child of the last
King and
Queen, her youngest cousin was next in line. Leor protested that it wasn't fair to his children, and that even though the youngest heirs were triplets, one of them, either San or
Lia, had a right to the throne. After all, the
Queen had died so that they might live.
While the advisers acknowledged that, by law,
Princess San was the heir, they also knew that a neighboring nation was preparing an attack. As San could hardly be crowned queen, Gentian needed a leader. Leor was allowed to be regent, but only for less than five years, as he was not born in Gentian.
The advisers told him that the best chance for his children to survive until they were old enough to be rule would be to marry the next heir, Sola's rather young noble cousin.
Leor told the advisers that he would think about this proposition.
