After the birth of Princess Liliane, the physician's decreed that the Queen was not physically able to sustain another pregnancy, it would end her life for sure. Emeline was overjoyed at this as the thought of going through another birth terrified her after the difficult times she'd had with the last two births. A part of her felt as though she was a failure however, after all, as Queen it was her duty to produce heirs, but Jacques assured her that he was happy with their sons and daughter, and Liliane would make a fine Queen one day with her big brothers to look after her, just as Emeline's brothers had done for her. The royal advisers were not so satisfied however, but what could they do against the entire Verbena family who all supported Emeline. The most experienced and trusted of all herbalists created Emeline elixiors to ensure she would not get pregnant again and so life went on.
Emeline never fully regained the strength she'd had before the twins birth, but she was able to get by with her husband and brothers help and Rossinest was happy, though Jacques was constantly watching the border to the east that Rossinest shared with Delacroix, just waiting for some sign of what his father had planned. Things in the palace were finally happy and normal when the queen fell ill. Her symptoms were the same as she had previously experienced with her pregnancies, but that was impossible surely, she'd been taking her elixor religiously. If she had been honest with herself, Emeline would have admitted right away what she new to be the truth, she was pregnant, but instead she just hoped it was a stomach bug that would go away on it's on. By the time the truth was impossible to ignore any longer there was nothing that could be done but hope and pray that the Queen would defy the odds and make it through.
Jacques was furious upon the news that the Queen was once again pregnant, knowing that the chances of her living through the birth were slim. Emeline's brothers were angry also and they, along with Jacques, went to visit the herbalist in charge of making Emeline's birth control to demand answers as to how this could have happened. The poor man was terrified as he was confronted with an angry King and seven angry princes and sang like a bird. He'd been paid a handsome sum by a mysterious strangler to swap out a few doses of the Queens elixor with a different elixor, one designed to promote fertility. In his anger King Jacques ran the fool through with his sword as his greed was in his mind likely to be the cause of the Queens demise. Jacques and the seven princes vowed to find this mysterious stranger and do away with him also, but for now, their priority had to be Emeline and doing everything they could to give her the best chance of coming through this alive.
Emeline was suprisingly calm however, almost eeriely. She'd come to terms with her mortality the moment she admitted that she was pregnant again, and found the acceptance of her pending death rather freeing. She needed be afraid of the birth, because she knew she wouldn't survive it regardless, but she had to do everything in her power to give the child she would never raise the best possible start. Emeline met with all kinds of healers and conjurers throughout her pregancy doing anything and everything she could to have a strong, healthy child, but nothing could save her from going into labour prematurely. Emeline knew her time was up, but pushed with whatever strength she had left to deliver her child before her time was up and was rewarded with a few precsious moments with her tiny, but strong, son before falling into nothingness cradled in Jacques' arms. Jacques was devastated but the physicians noticed something very wrong as a ripple went across the Queens stomach and they realised that there was still another baby yet to be born! One of the physicians thinking quickly and responding to the desperation of the situation took a knife and quickly cut the deceased Queen open. Jacques was horrified as they reached inside and before he knew it they had simultaneously pulled out not one, but TWO additional babies, both little girls.
Miraculously all 3 triplets were healthy, proving that perhaps something the Queen did in her quest to make them strong truly worked... and also proving that whatever potion the queen was given to promote fertility truly worked as well! A few days later, once everyone was sure that all of the babes would live a lavish funeral was held for Emeline and Rossinest was put into a state of mourning for a week. At the conclusion of this however, decisions needed to me made. The royal advisers were in a state of panic - they'd been desperate to avoid a situation where a multiple birth included the rightful heir, thus why'd they'd pressed the Queen after the twins birth, and now triplets?! It just wouldn't do at all. And not only that, but no matter how you looked at it none of the Queen's children were old enough to even be considered to rule, and while a loved King, Jacques-Léon had no claim to the throne of Rossinest without his Queen... It was a right mess.
As a temporary solution, it was decided that whilst everything was sorted out King Jacques-Léon would maintain power as Rossinest desperately needed that stability. Privately, Jacques and Emeline's brothers were also sparing no resource to find the Queen's murderer, the mysterious stranger... And finally they did, but Jacques was horrified at the answer they found. The mysterious stranger had been sent by his father, the Delacroixan king, King Francois... Francois had heard of Emeline's frail state after the birth of Liliane and the resulting order that any further births would kill her and so had set about to orchastrate exactly that thus destabilising Rossinest. Jacques-Léon was beyond furious, his own father had set up the murder of his beloved Emmeline and was now using the uncertainty around Rossinest's monarchy to launch an attack. Jacques-Léon appealed to his brother-in-laws for help vowing to kill his father, the man who had now killed two Queens of Rossinest. In a meeting with the princes and the advisers that lasted days and many goings over of the Rossinest laws of succession a solution was found...
It was agreed by all parties that in this time of uncertainty it was in Rossinest's best interest that the ruling monarchy stay unchanged as much as possible, which meant making sure that Jacques-Léon remained king. The only way to achieve this however was for all of Emeline's brothers to step aside in turn, which meant that the next in line would fall to their children, and there in lied the answer. In Rossinest, the age one can legally take the throne without needing a regent is 15, which meant that in this scenario all children under the age of 15 were ineligible... also, as the youngest child is considered the heir, this meant that the child of royal blood closest to the age of consent would become the rightful ruler of Rossinest once all seven brothers abdicated... which made the daughter of Prince Vincent, the Princess Rosalinda, the rightful Queen of Rossinest. Jacques-Léon was uncomfortable with what they were implying, after all, Rosalinda was not only half his age but a child that had been raised as his niece, and now she must become his wife if he is to keep the crown...
