It depends on the individual name, I guess. Masculine or masculine-sounding nicknames on girls can be interesting and pleasant with some names but discordant and strange with others. Ron and Ben are still very masculine to me, it seems kind of strange.
As for masculine nicknames I do like, Sam / Sammy for Samantha and Alex for Alexandra are pretty common where I live, so they're more gender-neutral to me. For more unusual names, I kind of like Ned for Eluned (though it means idiot in some places) and Bran for Branwen (though I like Bran on its own as a boy name).
