[Opinions] Masculine nicknames on girls
What do you think of masculine nicknames on girls? Not full names, just abbreviations.I thought of this because I recently became friends with two girls named Ron and Ben. I thought they were guys before I met them and was quite surprised. Turned out their full names are Rona and Bénédict. Bénédict is from French Canada, I was surprised it was spelled that way because the feminine form is actually Bénédicte and her parents are French, but I guess they liked the way it looked (clickable: Benedict, Benedicte). Rona is from Canada, but not the French part.I used to dislike those nicknames but they are so nice on them. They're are actually really girly and not tomboy-ish at all, and it was kind of weird but also nice to see them on a girl, especially Ron which is dated as a boys name but on her it seems nice. She was also called Roni a bit. I just found out that Ron is unisex in Israel. I knew Roni was but not Ron. Kind of nice.Other examples: On a Disney show my cousin watches there's a girl named Teddy and one named Charlie. It made those names grow on me, I think Veronica, Rona "Ron" is cool and so are Benedicte "Ben", Theodora "Teddy", Charlotte "Charlie". I just prefer a really feminine full form they can fall back on.WDYT?

If they're just nicknames, I don't see it as problematic. I've met quite a few girls named Samantha "Sam" and it worked for them, so something like Theodora "Teddy" seems fine to me. I personally love Leona "Leo" for a girl.

I love them. They're kind of my guilty pleasure and I can't ever turn them away. I'm not a big fan of Ben or Ron, but I understand that sometimes a name goes with a person so well that you can't help but fall in love with it. Here are some of my favorites off the top of my head.Francis "Frankie"
Theodora "Theo"
Josephine/alternates "Fin" or "Joey"
Charlotte "Charlie"
Andrea/Andromeda "Andie"
Diane/Danielle "Dani"
Antonia/Antoinette "Toni"
Samantha "Sam"I'm sure there are tons of others I have, but this is all I can think of right now. :)

Why not?I see nothing wrong with it, nor do I see anything wrong with boys having feminine nicknames. Nicknames in general are not a big deal to me.

I have mixed feelings. Sometimes it can be cute, e.g. Winifred "Fred", but I don't tend to like unisex nicknames like Alex or Charlie.

It depends on the individual name, I guess. Masculine or masculine-sounding nicknames on girls can be interesting and pleasant with some names but discordant and strange with others. Ron and Ben are still very masculine to me, it seems kind of strange. As for masculine nicknames I do like, Sam / Sammy for Samantha and Alex for Alexandra are pretty common where I live, so they're more gender-neutral to me. For more unusual names, I kind of like Ned for Eluned (though it means idiot in some places) and Bran for Branwen (though I like Bran on its own as a boy name).

I prefer girl names for girls and boy names for boys, but in a nickname, it's okay, I guess.
I know a Samantha who goes by Sam a lot, and it doesn't seem weird. I think Sam is more unisex.
I don't really care for Ben and Ron on girls though. I could see Ron more than Ben, probably because there are more girl names that have Ron in them than girl names that have Ben in them.

Having grown up as a bit of a tomboy, I always wanted a masculine nickname. I really like the option. Some I like:
Mack for Mackenzie or Makenna
Ken/Kenny for Mackenzie, Makenna, Kendra, Kendall
Sam/Sammie for Samantha
Alec/Alex for Alexa, Alexandra
Dan/Dani for Danica
Jo for Josephine
Matt/Matty for Mattea

My cousin Danielle Joan is called Dani (Jo). (Her mom is Joan, nn Jo.)
I like the Disney show Good Luck Charlie, and can't imagine Teddy or Charlie with different nns. I do like Charlie better than Char. (Sorry second cousin who isn't on the board.)
Ron and Ben are too unusual as girls' nns imo.

I don't like Ron and Ben on girls. I don't mind Ronnie and Bennie. I think the EE sound at the end makes it more feminine friendly. I really don't like nicknames eitherway, though.

I still think of Ron and Ben as masculine nicknames and always will.

Cringe worthy.. Especially Charlie and Ben. Honestly there is nothing I hate more than masculine names being used on girls.

I'm Veronica nn Ronnie. I like masculine nicknames on girls, but only if it's just a nickname.

I think it depends on the name. Ron and Ben are just weird. I knew a Bennie (it was short for Bernadette or Bernadine or something), and that was kind of OK, but Ben... whatever. The two Gabriell(a)'s I knew called Gabe were just totally disconcerting. Ditto for the little girl I know called Theo (Theodora I think?). Leave the boys' name to the boys-- there are plenty of girls' names out there! Thus said, I love Frankie, Jo and Billie on girls. Go figure.

I know three Charlie's who are girls (two are Charlotte and I think the other might be Charlene), I'm not that bothered by Charlie on girls but I prefer it on boys. I think Ron or Ronnie as a nickname for Veronica / Rona is adorable, Ben is cool too! I met a girl named Frederica nn Fred once and I thought it was so sweet.
Others I like:
Sid
Robbie
Bobby
Stevie
Max
Phil

I often quite like boyish nicknames on girls. I love Frankie for a girl. I don't even think a boyish nickname needs a "really" feminine full name to fall back on, but some kind of full name is nice, usually. Except I really, really hate Charlie on a girl.
