Tanith, meaning "Great Mother" was a sky goddess of ancient Carthage who ruled the sun, moon, and stars. When the Romans conquered and destroyed Carthage, they called her "Dea Caelestis" ("Goddess of Heaven "). She is also identified with the goddess Astarte .
