One of the reasons I go from loving Penelope to disliking it is the fact that I find the go-to nicknames to be unattractive. "Penny" is the lowest-valued American coin (though perhaps this comes to my mind only because I'm American), and "Pen" is something you write with. Someone suggested Poppy to me once as a nickname, and while I initially liked it better than Penny & Pen, Poppy admittedly leaves much room for teasing...

So, I've settled on Penelope as a middle name. As for Penny as a full name... well, I think I've said quite enough, haven't I? :-)
