I like it actually... in the context that it is a female form of Ulysses. I don't like how much it sounds like Alyssa though. Ulyssa is so much prettier than Alyssa, and doesn't denote brattiness like Alyssa does.

Also, the meaning of a name is like a 3-4 to me. Not very important at all, although, if I like a name and find out that it means "killer of babies" or something, I would definitely think twice before using it.

Usually a name meaning is quite important for me (ranking... around 7), but mainly in the context of combos (two names with meanings that mesh well). That said, I think Ulyssa is gorgeous.

I like it, but I don't think I'd actually use it. The "U" at the beginning gives it quirkiness and the -lyssa part gives it normalcy. I think it's a good balance. The only thing is that it might be confused with Alyssa, which is still popular.

For me, the meaning of a name for me is moderately important. I'd say about a 5 or 6. The meaning doesn't have to be superb. It could even be something random that is rather mundane. As long as the meaning doesn't bother me, I'd still use the name. If it has a great meaning, that's a bonus.

It's not something I'd use myself, but I'd think it was pretty cool if I saw it on someone. And it's a lot more substantial and interesting than Alyssa.

Bonus question: as a name nerd and a historian and in the interests of accuracy, 10. In terms of naming children, more like 2. Unless it means something completely terrible, I don't really care; personal meaning, i.e. honoring, is far more important.

It's unique, but I prefer Odessa- from Odysseus- as the fem. form. Meaning isn't very important to me. 1

I find the meaning intriguing on so many levels. First it's linked to Ulysses, and James Joyce's Ulysses, which was interesting for a fundamentally unreadable book. Then it's linked to Odysseus and that rich mythological and story-telling tapestry, and the meaning 'to hate' is... interesting. Not pleasant, but fascinating, as in, how many names have that meaning? I don't see it as fundamentally horrible, but hate is an emotion of passion and it conjures up uninvited this image of a vengeful, wrathful, self-empowered and very determined entity which is so far from shrinking violet and timid meanings and implications that it's just charming in a way.

So for good or bad, it's a very strong meaning, and I like that. I'll never like the sum of the name entirely, but the fascinating implications and possible meaning make it interesting.

And so I must say that I rank meaning at about an 8. It's what makes names so interesting and got me on the subject to begin with, but I don't know... if the name's got a lovely look and sound, an interesting or even pleasant meaning is just an extra added bonus which pushes it over the edge. On the other hand, an undecided opinion about a name might be changed for the better by a good/unusual meaning, and a disliked name might earn a small virtue for meaning something interesting. It all depends.

I might be a total weirdo, but I actually like the meaning of Ulysses. It's... memorable. So is Ulyssa. I'd pick Ulyssa over Alyssa any day of the week. It's so shiny and purple, like a great faceted amethyst.

I'd say that the meaning of a name is at about a 9. It was the first thing I loved or cared about when it came to names and it's still way up there in importance for me.

I don't really like it. I don't like "issa" sounds... Melissa, Carissa, Alyssa, etc.
I did just go through a brief Ulysses liking phase, though.

I like it. I won't be adding it to my list, but I'd think it was nice for someone else to use. The importance of meaning depends. On the scale it would get a 1 just for whether I like a name or not, but something more like an 8 if I actually had to name a child.

Ulyssa - I cannot for the love of God find a name for a girl that starts with U that I don't hate. Ulyssa is one of the least hated but only because it looks like the name Alyssa. Not that I care much for Alyssa but it is an okay name. Ulyssa to me looks like it should be pronounced like Ulyssa - like a almost phonetic spelling of Alyssa. I hate the yoo- pronunciation. Me Tarzan, You Lyssa.

BQ: It depends, if I really like a name than the meaning doesn't matter much, if I am torn between two names I would probably go with the one with the better meaning, if I see a name as just okay but the meaning really sucks I'll probably dismiss it.
