Just been thinking about this name lately and am beginning to like it more. I think it's sort of spunky and charming but is it usable or is it too much of a "dog name."

totally surprised
I was completely expecting Rex to be reacted to the way Jax was, but mostly people seemed to be in favour. Go figure. For me they feel very much the same. Fun and spunky, but nickname material only.

I am also a bit surprised that so many people like it. The difference between Rex and Jax, I think, is the fact that there aren't really any fuller versions of Rex so it doesn't seem as nicknameish. Not to mention Rex is more historically established as a name in its own right

I love the name Rex! It's short and sharp and very catchy. I think a lot of people will think it's a "dog's name", but I certainly don't. There are heaps of dogs named Max and Molly too and both of those names are so popular here in Australia. As for combos, I like:

I know a Rex!!! A real life Rex! He is about 4 years old now. His bother's name is Rey (sticking with the whole "king" theme).
His mother (a friend of mine) said if she has a daughter, she will name her Regina (again, the royalty thing).
He was conceived during Mardi Gras, and the king of Carnival's name is Rex. I guess her reasoning was "after you have one Rex, how do you follow up with another child without completely giving him/her a strong name like that as well"?

In my opinion, it's too much of a dog name. I think it seems like a dog name, because it's very nicknamey. It just doesn't seem like a person's full name. I don't think it's usable as a full name in its own right but rather as a nickname for something else. Also, it reminds me of the dinosaur.

I've always loved Rex. It wasn't until I came to these boards that I discovered so many people associate it with dogs. Personally, I think of actor Rex Harrison and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."
Spunky and charming describe Rex perfectly. Finding a mn is difficult, because I automatically think, "king" when I think of Rex. So it can be distracting. But using Rex and a mn is even more difficult because of tyranasaurus (sp?) rex.
So, having said all that, I do think Rex would make a wonderful fn for a combo. How about:

It really is a rakish rapscallion of a name. I was a bit turned off that Desperate Housewives used it, but I guess it hardly detracts from the bright plastic kitchsy charm it has for me.
I actually think its "dog" label is fading fast, since I'd say people just don't use it for dogs any more; it's gone out of fashion. Most people tell me my name is a "dog name" more often than Rex is "only for dogs"!

The only Rex I have ever heard was actually named Aurelius, and was called Rex. I am not sure it is my taste, but not horrid.
