Help[Opinions] Magnus
Lately I'm loving the name Magnus for a boy. It's one of my 'ugly' names - gorgeous to me, but not to many people! This means I'd keep it as a middle name I think ... What do you make of these combos?

I prefer Nichol Magnus. But, if you love it, you should use it as a first name.
I have a baby boy due in April and we are going with Magnus. I do get some strange looks, but the positive feedback on the board is encouraging. I do think the name is gaining in popularity or at least familiarity. I posted about Magnus back in the summer and the responses were definately more mixed. Maybe Will Ferrel naming his son Magnus has put it more in the limelight.
At any rate, yeah for Magnus.
I also do not see the name as something to live up to. My son is already "great" in my eyes, no matter how he turns out. He will always be the "great one" in our hearts.
So, there are my two cents for what it's worth. :-)

Joel Magnus
I love both Joel and Magnus (and both names are popular in Sweden).
Magnus pronounced the English way sounds a bit harsh, so I prefer it with a softer fn like Joel. Farrell Magnus would gm2v.
Magnus is pronounced "MUNG-nus" in Sweden.

I love Magnus - not a surprise since I'm in love with Scandinavian names lately. I would use it even as a firt name, but I'm not sure it would match your naming style. As a mn, it's perfect.

But would not Max be more to live up to?
Magnus means "great", Max(imilian) means "greatest". I think it is not about the meaning but about how common a name is. Max is common, therefore nobody talks about the meaning.

I love it too. I have a long "nobody will like this but me" list too.
From your list I like the combination Nichol Magnus. But I think *the* first name is still out there for Magnus.
I almost prefer Magnus as a fn. As a mn, it reminds me of Peter "the Great" or Frederick "the Great" or Pompei Magnus ("the Great"). I have the same problem with Rex or Regina as mns. But I understand why you would shy away from using it as a fn. Nn Maggie for a boy? It worked for Senator Magnusson (sp?) here in Washington State, but he was a beloved old curmudgeon by then.
Still, it's a great (no pun intended) name.
