My name book says that it's an Irish Gaelic name derived from Latin meaning tiger (the Latin name for the animal is Panthera tigris). Apparently, the similarity with the river's name is coincidental (which came about by the Greek translation of the Persian word Tigra into Tigris). There are 7 people with the name Tigris in the US.___________________________________________________________

Thanks for the answer! It still doesn't solve the "mystery", though...there are obviously no tigers in Ireland...

Who knows what 'tiger' meant to them at the time. It might have been a symbol of strength or...?
