I came across this recently in a movie, as an Arabic name meaning "tulip" (it's in the database as user-submitted and listed as "popular culture"). I probably wouldn't use it because it's not Italian-sounding enough, but I find it charming and an interesting alternatives to other Mir- names.

Hah, I was the one who submitted it! It was the name of Tom and B'Elanna's daughter in Star Trek: Voyager. I really like it. I'm glad to know it's a legitimate name, too - I believe it was a Klingon name in the series (Miral was named for her grandmother, who was Klingon).

Actually, why does no-one up and call their baby girl Tulip? A tulip is as pretty as a rose,at least for me.
On the other hand, I do have a daughter, and *didn't* call her Tulip!

When I looked again and saw Miral, my first thought was that it rhymes with viral. However, it's prob'ly prn'd differently... It's still only 1 letter off though and not so appealing.

Oh, that's pretty. I love the idea of naming your kid after a tulip, but the word tulip has always seemed lacking to me.

Yup, it's the name of a Palestinian little girl in a book/film, no idea if it's used for males as well.
