I definately wouldn't use two variants of the same name. I like names with different origins and the same meanings or theme, though.

I agree, variants of the same name are still the same name. But some of the pairs seem mismatched if used in real life. Especially the Slavic- Latin/Greek/ Germanic pairs.
Victor and Nicola- Perhaps Viktor and Nikolai (both are Russian forms of the names)
