Noëlle's childhood with her grandparents was a happy one--though she was cut off from her Muslim heritage by her well-meaning grandparents and had to assume a caretaker role at a very young age, Joseph and Marguerite took very good care of Noëlle and encouraged her to pursue her interests. As she got older, Noëlle became very interested in her lost past--her memories of her parents and her father's family were few and hazy, and she had forgotten how to speak Arabic long ago--and often surreptitiously read the very few library books on Islam, often attracting jeers and even threats. Noëlle dutifully took care of her grandparents until their deaths, studying broadcast journalism at the Institut d'Etudes Politique. After her grandmother dies when she is 25, Noëlle begins an intense study of Islam and Algerian culture, culminating with her conversion to Islam and changing her name to Noor--Noëlle, after all, means Christmas, and Noor was the name her paternal grandmother called her as a very small child. Noor becomes a very well-known journalist and Muslim activist, spreading awareness throughout Europe and campaigning for broader acceptance of Islam. Noor marries another prominent Muslim activist, and they have twins.
