What do you think of the name Plum? It's generally not the type of name I prefer, but I must admit it has been growing on me as a GP name, particularly after reading some of Plum Sykes' work. Really, how is it any different than Iris, Rose, or Pearl?
Are there any other fruit/food names that appeal to you?

I love Plum for a mn, but wouldn't use it as a fn.

It's very cute. But perhaps too cute. It's one of those names that would suit a child wonderfully, but might seem odd on a grown-up. I'm not sure what it is that makes more traditional choices like Rose or Iris more "mature" sounding but adventurous ones like Plum or Zinnia so flighty. Wow Plum and Zinnia look real nice together, don't they?
I rather like it as a kind of affectionate nickname for Prudence. And it would make a darling surprise middle name.
I myself am partial to the food names:
Honey
Marzipan (this is strict GP territory)
Maple

I think it's cute. I wouldn't be too surprised if it started being used more. There's something sort of postmodern about it.

In theory, I like Plum, however, I just don't like the sound of it for a name or the way it rolls off my tongue.

But I think it's fine. Most of the "rules" surrounding names are gone, and I think Plum fits in quite well. Just give her a "serious" middle name to fall back on.

Imagine your at the playground with your kid and she goes wondering off away from you and your calling out, "Come back here Plum. Plum, come here." People are going to stare at you for saying that.

Like I said in the original post, I'm considering it as a GP. And there's no need to post twice, since you've already called it "retarded." Your opinion is quite clear.

I apoligize for being mean. My friend got really mad at me and I think now we'll never be friends again. I just was really upset, even crying at one point and Im really sorry for writing that.

I'm not sure why, but when I hear the name Plum, my first thought is of an Asian prostitute.

Plum? As a name?! I think it's a pretty retarded name to call someone. Imagine being named after a purple fruit.

Please watch your language. It's just as easy to say something is "stupid" or "inane" or "silly." There's no need to use an offensive word.

I don't care for the sound of it. Although Tangerine isn't one I'd use either, I find it much more appealing than Plum. In general, I'm not too fond of fruit names, such as Banana or Apricot, but I usually don't mind names that have meanings related to fruit.

I like it but I would only use it a a middle name and probably not even that because my husband wouldn't go for it.
Now Almond is a name that I might very well use. It is my grandmother's first name.

I read about a male Almond once with a brother Desmond. I wonder if Almond has other roots as a name apart from the nut?

Food names are different than floral names, for me. Names that bring to mind eating have a sexual overtone that worries me.
There are some food names that I like, (Clementine, Ginger) but usually they have more than one association. And I have no problem with a name from another culture whose name means a food (Prunella = plum, Afanen = raspberry).
But the obvious, in-my-face "eat me" names like Plum and Apple are still difficult for me to like.
I know a woman who named her dd Plum.

I actually have a young relative named Persimmon. I don't know if it's an idea that came to them, or they know another child so named.
As it's a less common fruit,(at least for me)it sits a bit better than Apple and Plum.

I'm not a fan, I think because it sounds like plump to me. I like Jagoda, Malina, Dunja, as Croatian fruit names. The only English one I like is Clementine.

I didn't know that about Plum Sykes - thanks! I know Mirabelle is also a plum. Using it as a nickname does open it up for more conventional possibilities. Still, probably just a GP for me.

True, it might be the edible factor, although other names like Saffron, Clementine, or Ginger are also associated with food.

I could only use it as a middle name. It's still too GP for me to use it up front. As far as other fruit/food names, I like Clementine, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
