It says on this page that it was invented by an author but I did some research and it seems to have been used way before her book was released. I also know a
Ronja who was born in the 60s, she's from
Israel and she says she knows another girl from there who spells it Roniya and another who spells it Ronia (all pr. RON-ya) which supports the theory that it is related to the Hebrew name
Roni (I once asked on the name facts board and someone found Ronia, Roniya,
Ronja in a Hebrew baby name book).
