The second Lemaître sister,
Jocelyne, is the head pastry chef and baker of the Lemaître bakery. A natural baker since she was old enough to sift flour,
Jocelyne developed the recipes for the famous Lemaître tarts, pies, and pastries while her older sister held up the business end. She marries the town dentist, a seemingly jovial man who loves to give his new wife presents, but behind closed doors, he is controlling and abusive.
Jocelyne tries to hide her bruises and cuts and preserve her marriage for their son and daughter, but
Chantal soon sees through this and urges
Jocelyne to get out of the marriage before her husband kills her. Meanwhile,
Jocelyne befriends a weathered yet handsome riverboat captain who, while docked near the Champs-Elysees on the Seine, had become fond of the bakery, and even fonder of
Jocelyne. Eventually she confides in the riverboat captain about her situation, and she and the captain spend a night of passion together. He promises to take her away--she could work as a cook on his ship, be his wife and his lover, he would treat her two young children as his own.
Jocelyne desperately wants to leave, but wonders if she's being capricious. One night her husband comes home extra angry and for the first time hits her oldest son,
Jocelyne decides that she has had enough. One day while her husband was away,
Jocelyne packs up as many of their possessions as they could carry, picks up her two children from school, and joins the captain on his boat.
Jocelyne and her new family live the nomadic seafarer life for many years--she homeschools her now three children and is thrilled with waking up every day in a new place.
