I have a male student in one of my classes named
Jasmin. He has a surname which indicates he does come from a Slavic background, and comments this site points out that
Jasmin is used as a male name in both Bosnia and Slovenia at least.
I'm just curious as to whether the male name used in the Balkans has the same derivation as
Jasmin or
Jasmine when used in other cultures. Is it derived from the name of the flower? Or is there a completely separate derivation for this as a Slavic male name, and it only accidentally has the same form as the western European female name? Does anyone have more history on its use as a male name in the Balkains?
Thanks!
