I dislike Lani as a nn so very much - I don't know how it happens, but every girl I've met with the name Lani/ Laney etc has been simply dreadful and boorish.
Melania is very lovely though. If you're not keen on Mel, how about Mia, Nia, Mimi, or Milly?
